kepala selalu menengadah menghadap langit.
mata nanar menatap asa tanpa berkedip.
tangan gemulai bersama jari nan lentik terentang bagaikan sayap, mengayuh udara sekitar.

“Indonesia: Global Home of Batik”
Batik: Indonesia’s Most Famous Artistic and Cultural Legacy. Batik is considered Indonesia’s most famous artistic and cultural legacy and has developed a global reputation over the centuries. In 2009, this contribution to world culture was officially recognized by UNESCO in honoring Indonesian Batik with the prestigious award of “Intangible Heritage of Humanity”
Batik as Part of the Creative Economy: Indonesian Batik is simultaneously an art form, a cultural heritage, a promotional tool for tourism and a symbol of national identity, as well as an important player in the country’s presently burgeoning creative economic sector. Batik industries are mostly small and medium-size enterprises which employ hundreds of thousands of people directly and indirectly, both in cities and rural villages throughout the archipelago.
Batik: Worldwide Art Form. Indonesians are not the only people to use the technique of Batik, although it is generally recognized that the island of Java, in particular, is where Batik has reached its greatest heights of accomplishment. Batik is known to have been used in Egypt in the fifth and sixth centuries and there are well-established Batik traditions in China, Japan, Central Asia and West Africa. From Java, the art of Batik spread to the rest of the Indonesian archipelago where the popularity of the cloth led to the establishment of many production centers. Batik’s influence in contemporary times has inspired fashion and design creations worldwide and features in the major fashion centers of Tokyo, Milan, Paris, London, and New York.
The Popularity of Batik. Another factor in the popularity of Batik is its extreme durability and diverse and flexible applications. The colors in Batik are much more resistant than those of ordinary painted or printed fabrics. Today’s Batik artists create Batik in every type of medium, such as silk, cotton, wool, leather, paper or even wood and ceramics. It is used for clothing, painting, accessories, and interior designs.
Batik selected for UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. President Susilo Yudhoyono warmly welcomed UNESCO’s global recognition of Batik as a unique hallmark of Indonesian heritage at a meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Abu Dhabi on October 2nd, 2009.
Batik has helped create a strong identity within Indonesia. Documented evidence from as far back as the 13th century indicates that Javanese Batik was a highly prized possession and a valuable source of trade for export. Batik is Indonesia’s artistic and cultural legacy which over the centuries has helped shape Indonesia’s identity both nationally and internationally. Batik has encouraged small scale manufacture and home industry in local communities, involving women in particular. Indonesian artisans have succeeded in developing their home industry into well established companies that not only market directly to the domestic market but also export Batik all over the world.
Batik influences Indonesian Tourism. Java’s notable accomplishments in Batik have attracted visitors to Indonesia for many years. Batik plays an important role in tourism and is used in many hotels, resorts and other hospitality outlets to create a strong artistic impression. Additionally, special interest tourism offers enthusiasts from abroad the opportunity not only to buy Batik-related products, but also to take Batik workshop courses and further develop their fascination in the craft; this rapidly growing interest in Batik has led to the current trend of Batik workshops springing up in North America and Europe.
Goals
To confirm Indonesia’s international role as the “Global Home of Batik” within the world community;
To reaffirm Batik’s importantance in Indonesia’s creative economic sector by critically examining current Batik production techniques, distribution, marketing methods, training and government support policies;
To generate enthusiasm for Batik in the contemporary Indonesian culture, particularly amongst the younger generation, through extensive promotion in the social media and by sponsoring a Batik Carnival in celebration of Batik, aimed at the general public;
To present a major exhibition of Batik-inspired arts, crafts, design and fashion from Indonesia and other countries to demonstrate the wide and varied mediums in which Batik flourishes as a global art form;
To promote the exchange and evaluation of Batik production techniques, practical ideas, marketing methods and concepts among artisans from different countries;

Kraton Ngayogjakarta Hadiningrat setiap tanggal 1 Sawal dalam Kalender Jawa mengelar tradisi Grebeg Syawal (Sawal), menandai hari kemengan setelah berpuasa Ramadhan sebulan penuh .
